IPL Photofacial

What is IPL?

IPL is an acronym for intense pulsed light. This technique is similar to laser treatment, though it utilizes a broad spectrum of light, rather than specific wavelengths. The energy is delivered is short, intense bursts, making treatment gentle and conservative, with amazing results.

A photofacial is a skin rejuvenation treatment using IPL energy. Despite the name, it can be used on many areas of the body, including the hands, arms, chest, neck, and of course the face. Intense pulses of light are applied by a skilled technician using a small, handheld device.

Conditions treated by IPL

This is a highly customizable treatment, because the hand piece is equipped with filters allowing the practitioner to adjust the range of wavelengths used. This is important because various wavelengths act on specific components in the skin. IPL can be used to treat many conditions, including:
  • Brown spots
  • Redness
  • Sun spots
  • Age spots
  • Acne scars
  • Broken facial capillaries
  • Pigment irregularities
  • Skin texture irregularities
  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • And more!

The procedure is always performed by a skilled and properly certified technician. We begin by applying a soothing cooling gel to the treatment area. You will be supplied with special goggles to protect your eyes from the intense light. When you are ready, the technician will adjust the IPL device, and gently glide the hand piece over the treatment area. The entire process takes about 15 to 30 minutes, though the exact time will vary depending on the size of the area.

A series of treatments, usually scheduled four weeks apart, is recommended to achieve optimal results. The number of treatments needed is usually between three and six, though it depends on several factors, including your skin type, and the condition being treated. Some patients see marked improvement after just two or three sessions, while others require several.

Photofacial combination treatments

IPL photofacial treatments alone can achieve improvement in the texture and tone of your skin. However, they are often used in combination with other procedures, such as Botox or dermal fillers for a complete anti-aging treatment. It may also be part of a multi-faceted therapy for conditions such as rosacea, which cause facial redness. IPL can reduce the visible signs, while medications are used to prevent future flares.
