Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Since 1987, Platelet Rich Plasma, also referred to as PRP, has been used for promoting healing in many different types of procedures including orthopedic cases, plastic surgery, and dental treatment. It has also been shown to be extremely beneficial for skin rejuvenation. This treatment is done with the plasma derived from one's own blood. A blood draw is completed in which a small amount is spun in a special centrifuge. This separates the components of the blood so the platelet rich plasma can be harvested. This is then applied in a topical solution or injections to deliver growth factors and reduce the signs of aging and scarring. Dr. Seymour Weaver often uses PRP after microneedling procedures, laser treatments, and dermal filler injectables. There are many benefits to using Platelet Rich Plasma. These include:
  • Elimination of risk of allergies as the product is derived from one's own body
  • Rejuvenation of the skin
  • Improved texture and tone of the skin
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles
  • Increased volume to the skin due to increased collagen and elastin production
  • Improved appearance of scars, including acne and surgical scars
  • Providing stem cells to promote hair growth for men and women with hormonal hair loss
The considerations patients need to know before and after PRP treatment:
  • Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for approximately ten days before treatment, as this can impair the normal clotting process required for the platelets to work
  • Stay well-hydrated and eat a light meal as this procedure does require an initial blood draw
  • Avoid wearing cosmetics the day of treatment
After treatment, it is important that patients follow these instructions post-procedure:
  • Avoid sun exposure for two to three days following treatment
  • Avoid swimming, saunas, hot tubs, and Jacuzzis for two to three days
  • Avoid exposure to significant temperature changes for two to three days
  • Avoid exercising and strenuous activity for one day following treatment
  • Avoid other skin services such as laser therapies and chemical peels for at least two weeks following PRP treatment
