Dermatologist in Houston, TX discusses the many methods of acne scar removal for effective treatment
When it comes to methods of removal and treatment options for acne and acne scars, our dermatologist in Houston, TX provides several solutions. Dr. Seymour Weaver is our lead dermatologist at Dr. W Dermatology and offers patients a variety of options for the treatment and removal of active acne blemishes and the scars often left behind.
What is acne?
Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that affects men and women of all ages, including children and teenagers. While it used to be considered a condition that only impacted hormonal teenage boys and girls, it spans all generations, ages, and genders. Cysts, pustules, and pimples are a common sign that acne is present, and it can be diagnosed as anything from mild to severe by a trained, experienced dermatologist. Treating acne is one thing, but addressing the marks left behind is another!
What is acne scarring?
Dr. Seymour Weaver describes acne scars as marks or indentations left behind from improperly treated acne. Patients who have severe acne are more at risk of developing acne scars on their skin. There are several types of acne scars, including rolling scars which leave dimpling on the skin and ice pick scars which can be deep marks. During an assessment with Dr. Seymour Weaver, patients can have their skin evaluated and determine what method of removal is recommended as a treatment for reducing or eliminating the appearance of acne scars.
What methods of acne scar removal are available?
The treatment of acne scars is achieved in several different ways, depending on the type of the scar and the depth and severity of the marks left behind. Some solutions our team may recommend include:
- Chemical peels
- Laser/fractional resurfacing
- Saline injections
- Punch grafting
- Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)
Which treatment is right for me?
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for patients with acne and acne scars. Therefore, we encourage patients to book a consultation visit with the team at Dr. W Dermatology to determine the type of condition they are combatting. They can then work with our dedicated staff to decide which treatment is most appropriate. Some patients with rolling, superficial scars may do best with treatments such as chemical peels, which can remove the upper layer of the skin and allow fresh, more youthful skin to appear. This can reduce the look of scarring that just affects the texture of the skin. However, deep scarring, such as ice pick scars are sometimes best treated with microneedling and collagen induction therapy (CIT). Some dermatologists use dermal fillers for acne scars, but we find that microneedling works much better, especially on large pitted scars. Dermal fillers are best used on shallow scarring. Many patients love treatments that improve the entire facial area, such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion, as this allows them to treat a variety of issues at once, and not just acne scars themselves. All these aspects of acne scarring are considered when patients consult with our professionals to decide which treatment is most appropriate for their specific needs and unique situations. We assess each patient as an individual and offer the treatment option that will work best for them.
