What is Retin-A?

Retin-A is a prescription strength skin enhancer formulated with a Vitamin A derivative, known as tretinoin. It has been in use for about 25 years, with proven results. Retin-A was originally introduced as an acne medication, but dermatologists and their patients quickly noticed an unexpected, pleasant side effect. In addition to clearing up acne breakouts, the treatment improved the tone and texture of patients’ skin. It has been used for a wide variety of anti-aging applications ever since.

What Retin-A does

Unlike many commercial anti-aging products, the effects of Retin-A have been proven in clinical studies. The first study to be published was over 20 years ago, and all 30 participants showed a statistically significant improvement in their skin after 16 weeks. These finding have been confirmed many times in subsequent research. It is unique in the fact that it works at a molecular level, remodeling the skin and reducing the signs of aging.

  • Improves the appearance of fine lines on the face.
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation problems.
  • Improves the overall texture of skin.

Retin-A treatment from Dr. W Dermatology

We will begin with an examination and discussion of your skin concerns. Retin-A is beneficial for many individuals. However, for patients with dry or sensitive skin, Renova (a similar product in a moisturizing base) may be recommended instead. At Dr. W Dermatology, we believe in personalized care, tailored to each patient’s needs. If either formula is prescribed, we will provide complete instructions for use.

Retin-A can irritate the skin at first, so you may be advised to use it sparingly at the beginning of treatment. The most common problem patients experience with this product is misuse, prompted by impatience. If the first application seems to have no effect, it may be tempting to use more of it, or apply it more frequently, which may cause redness or flaking of the skin. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions closely, and give time for results to develop. After a few weeks, you may notice some visible results, and within six months, a dramatic improvement can occur.

Let us help you discover your healthiest, most beautiful skin gently and safely. Call Dr. W Dermatology at  (281) 771-0494 and schedule a consultation at our Houston office.

| Angela L.

“For about two years, I’ve had problems with skin irritations in my inner elbow area on both arms, behind the knees of both legs, on my lower legs and inside on top of my ankles as well as inside my armpits. The problem occurred when the weather became hot (late spring and summer into early fall), and was terribly annoying because these areas itched a lot and then left some dark scarring. Last summer, the problem spread to my neck area!

Until I saw Dr. Weaver, I was trying to alleviate the condition with Tinactin and then alcohol, but the alcohol blistered the skin on my neck!

I decided finally to call and schedule an appointment with the doctor (who has been treating my son for severe acne-cyst formation, etc for over a year). Dr. Weaver diagnosed my condition as a form of eczema and prescribed an ointment and gave samples of a pill.

As soon as I started using this ointment, the problem improved tremendously! I am very satisfied with the results I have seen and by the way, haven’t even needed the pills.

Thank you Dr. Weaver!!!”
