When patients have been diagnosed with a keloid scar, they need to work with a dermatologist in Houston, TX to learn more about treatment options available. Dr. Seymour Weaver of Dr. W Dermatology is a dedicated professional who is here to help patients in achieving beautiful, healthy looking skin, while addressing concerns that develop over time. Our practice can provide diagnosis and effective treatment of a variety of cosmetic and medical dermatology concerns.

What is a keloid scar?

Many patients are unfamiliar with what keloid scars are. These scars begin in areas where injury has occurred. Injury may include everything from a cut to a body piercing. What happens with a keloid scar is that during the healing process, when the body naturally produces collagen, the collagen production continues past the point of healing to develop a large mass that is called a keloid scar. This raised scar grows and can be irregular in shape and tough. Keloids can be painless, or they can become itchy and painful. Any keloid scars that are causing a medical or cosmetic concern can be addressed by the team at Dr. W Dermatology.

Treatment options for keloid scar removal

When patients have keloid scars, they often visit Dr. Seymour Weaver to discuss their options for removal. In most cases, the doctor will first determine if there is an infection present, as this should be treated before the keloid scar is addressed. It may include topical or oral antibiotics. Once the infection has been cleared, the dermatologist can then move forward with management of the keloid scar. There are a few ways in which this can be addressed.

  • Injections – Dr. Seymour Weaver may find that injecting the keloid with corticosteroids will help shrink and flatten the scar, while simultaneously relieving pain and itching. A series of injections is carried out and done four to six weeks apart until the scar is flattened or the symptoms resolve.
  • Surgical excision – another way to eliminate a keloid scar is to surgically remove it. However, because surgical trauma to the area may be why the keloid scar developed in the first place, there is a high risk of recurrence using this method. Therefore, postoperative management such as intralesional steroid injections is mandatory to prevent recurrence. While successful, patients should continue to monitor the area for a new growth.

It is essential that patients work with their dermatologist to determine the best possible way of treating their keloid scars. There is no “one size fits all” solution for many dermatological concerns, which is why the team at Dr. W Dermatology is proud to offer several options for patient consideration. During an initial consultation visit, patients can express their specific concerns and find out what treatments may be best suited for their specific needs.

What about itching?

Sometimes, keloid scars may not be very large or noticeable, but they can become extremely itchy. When itching is the only concern, patients can ask our team about intralesional steroid injections or prescription cortisone tape. This is a treatment for pain and itching, not for removal. However, it can make patients more comfortable with their keloid scar if it remains smaller and in an inconspicuous place on the body. With full removal methods using injections or surgical excision, patients will be able to eliminate itching, pain, and the actual keloid itself, and should be considered in some situations.
