Doctor in Houston, TX describes platelet rich plasma as a treatment for hair loss and thinning
Patients struggling with hair loss or hair thinning may feel as though hair transplant is their only option for improving their appearance. Thanks to continued advances in dermatological care, patients can now address hair loss with a treatment known as PRP, or platelet rich plasma. Dr. Seymour Weaver of Dr. W Dermatology in Houston, TX is pleased to announce the ability to provide improvements for hair loss with today’s latest techniques.
Platelet rich plasma is a special treatment that is used by Dr. Seymour Weaver to assist men and women who want to rejuvenate hair growth with a non-surgical option. This treatment is best for reversing hair loss and thickening the hair in areas where it may be thinning. This treatment has been used in many areas of medicine, including sports medicine and orthopedics. It has been found to be effective in hair restoration with continued evidence as support.
How does PRP work?
Because hair growth is based on the blood supply and the nutrition provided to the hair follicle, it is important to keep this area appropriately supplied to increase growth. This is especially true when the hair follicles are healthy. Because platelet rich plasma treatment uses a patient’s own blood plasma with concentrated platelets, it can be injected into the scalp to increase the growth of hair.
What can concentrated plasma do?
The plasma used in PRP can be injected to:
- Decrease inflammation
- Stimulate the growth of hair follicles
- Attract stem cells
- Increase blood circulation to the hair follicles
Dr. Seymour Weaver describes the procedure of PRP for hair growth
Treatment starts with taking some blood from the patient. This blood draw requires approximately 20 cc collected to obtain enough plasma for treatment. It is collected in a special container which is then put into a centrifuge. This machine essentially spins the blood to separate the elements. This pulls the platelets from the rest of the blood so that it can be injected into the scalp where the hair is lost or thinning. After treatment, patients can return to their regular day without interruption, allowing them to have treatments done during times that are convenient to them
Are there side effects and risks with PRP?
Absolutely not! Because we use a patient’s own platelet rich plasma, there are no side effects or risks with PRP treatment for hair loss and thinning. This makes it a wonderful choice for many of our patients who are worried about procedures that carry the risk of harm or problems after treatment.
How often should PRP treatment be completed?
For optimum results, patients should consider starting with four treatments in our office, spaced approximately two months apart. After the initial treatment and patients are seeing results, they should continue to have PRP treatments performed at Dr. W Dermatology every 6 to 12 months.
Can PRP treatment be used in conjunction with other treatments?
There are many ways in which patients may stimulate hair growth, including the use of red light therapy, DHT blockers, and Minoxidil. When patients are undergoing these therapies, they can use PRP at the same time. This can provide faster results when treatments are combined. Patients should make sure to let our team know that they are using other products to achieve results as part of the initial consultation, as some patients may choose to discontinue one method to allow PRP treatment to work on its own.
