Look at the facts about alopecia areata

September is National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month. Please join the NAAF in their efforts to bring attention and understanding to this condition which impacts 6.5 million people in the United States. Their rallying motto is “Look at Us!”

Alopecia Areata:

  • Is an autoimmune disorder that triggers hair loss on the scalp and body.
  • Usually presents as a small round patches and progresses to total hair loss.
  • Often occurs in families with asthma and allergies and autoimmune diseases.
  • Is presently not curable.
  • Can be treated with cortisone injections, topical minoxidil, and anthralin cream.
  • Can recur any time after hair grows back.
  • Is not a health threat, but results can be emotionally devastating.

Instead of hiding from curious stares or unkind comments, courageous alopecia areata sufferers are saying, “Look at me. I have a skin condition that needs effective treatment options and a cure.”

Please don’t look away. Look at what you can do to support awareness and research.

Is it too soon for Botox?
It can be easy to take the smooth, firm skin of youth for granted. However, as soon as the first line appears, aging becomes all too real. You may be wondering how soon is too soon for cosmetic treatment. Contrary to what you may expect, you don’t need to wait until you have significant wrinkles to begin Botox treatment.

As women and men are focusing more on preventive or early anti-aging treatments, dermatologists have reported a trend of younger Botox patients. Today, it is not uncommon for people to begin using Botox as early as 22 or 23, occasionally even younger. Not only does Botox smooth existing lines, it helps the causative muscles remain relaxed, helping to prevent new wrinkles in the treatment area.
What you should know about retinoids
Retinoids are among the most common and most effective anti-aging ingredients found in skincare products. Quality retinoid formulas can help improve your complexion, and preserve your youthful glow. What should you know before purchasing these products?

• Retinoids are more powerful than you may think. Don’t use a greater quantity or frequency than recommended by your dermatologist.

• Change isn’t always easy. When you begin a new regimen of retinoids, you may notice some skin irritation until you adjust.

• You’ll need to give up eyebrow waxing. Because retinoid products soften the skin, you will need to use tweezing or alternative hair removal methods in the treatment area.

• Sun protection is essential. This is true regardless of your skincare regimen, but retinoids increase sun sensitivity, making it even more important. Never use less than the SPF your dermatologist recommends.

Retinoids are available in both prescription and over-the-counter formulas. Please consult your dermatologist before choosing a product.
